Thirty-three million Americans have a food allergy.1 They eat in cafeterias and restaurants, work out in gyms, sleep in camp bunkhouses and sit in office lobbies. Many who should carry epinephrine don't, or left it at home, and that is as true of adults and older adults as it is of children. A stock supply exists for them, and for the person whose first reaction is happening right now. Schools are the one setting with a large survey of this, and in it more than one in five anaphylactic events involved someone with no previously known allergy.2
That is why states are moving to let schools, childcare programs and public places keep undesignated epinephrine on hand, and increasingly to require it. But a stock supply only helps if the person who reaches for it can find it. Not in a locked drawer, and not in a bag someone took home. In a marked cabinet, where a trained adult can see it.

Not sure how to get epinephrine for your building?
You need a prescription in your organization's name and a standing order saying when staff may use it. Ten states hand a school that second document. Two do the same for camps, gyms, restaurants and workplaces. Everywhere else, someone has to sign one for you.
Some K-12 schools can also get the medication free from manufacturer programs. Others buy standard auto-injectors through their usual supplier.
