VDH Statewide Standing Order for Epinephrine in School Settings
Two documents: a prescription in your organization's name, and a standing order saying when trained staff may use it.
Virginia permits nasal spray for undesignated stock use, so neffyinSchools applies here as well as EPIPEN4SCHOOLS. See both programs.
Buy standard auto-injectors through your usual pharmacy or medical supplier, which is what most organizations do.
Policies for possession and administration of epinephrine 'in every school'.
The statute says 'epinephrine' with no device qualifier, and the VDH statewide standing order expressly lists neffy at both 1 mg and 2 mg.
IMPORTANT NUANCE: Virginia is the only state with a statutory statewide childcare epinephrine mandate, but the implementing Board of Education regulation has NOT been adopted. Proposed 8VAC20-781 was published Dec 2025 and drew a formal objection in Jan 2026. Not yet enforceable through licensing.
Broadened in 2024 from 'every public place' to 'every place of public accommodation'.
Virginia has the most complete framework in the country: a school mandate, a statutory childcare mandate (regulation pending), a device-neutral statute, and a statewide standing order that includes nasal spray.
We keep this current because it's hard to find in one place. Report an update and we'll check it.
Laws change frequently and we may not have caught the latest amendment in Virginia. Confirm with your state department of health or education, your district's counsel, or your medical director before relying on it.
If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us. We'd rather hear it from you than have a school nurse act on a stale row.
